Oh I did not know animal abuse was a felony in all 50 states. The problem is, the sentences are often just a slap on the wrist. The "best " ones are when these psychopaths are not allowed to own any animal for evermore, but the abuse has to be extreme and if it is extreme enough should include jail time and massive fines.

I have saved this one to read again more closely later but I want to thank you for writing it. I am one of those who believes that we are animals and the way we treat nonhuman animals says a lot about how we view the lives and suffering of all.

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for the comment...I do believe there is a connection. Plus all the violence in the world has really gotten to me at the moment... Please read the latest version on my newsletter website rather than the one you received by email—I corrected some typos and added a bit for clarity. It was too late and I was too tired when I hit "Publish"!

Not familiar with Singer and I hadn’t previously considered the connection except for this: we are a country that refused to believe babies could feel circumcision, let alone that farm animals feel anything when separated from their young. This, I think, is due to the old christian ideal of dominion over the Earth, which includes animals and anything without intellect (women were long considered in this category too). Oppressors need something to oppress. 😔

Good points all, Jan. There is always the opprressor/oppressed pattern, isn't there? Singer is pretty amazing and well worth reading at least some of his extensive work.

What is a home without a cat and a dog? Our flat coat retriever is insistent on joining the conversation when my wife and I come together for a chat. We are all mutually dependent.

When the authorities insisted that employers cease to employ people in public facing positions when they refuse to be jabbed, we found other things for them to do and took on a couple who had been sacked and they were excellent. Then we moved our sales area into the garden for the sake of everyone involved.

I saw what I saw during the pandemic. It reminded me of the gulf that has widened between the rich and poor in America.

Unfortunately, that gulf has continued to widen.

I've always cheered when a bull has (rarely) done damage to a bullfighter. But the bull doesn't "win"; it gets killed no matter what. Basically it's an unfair bloodsport. Hunting sucks and trophy hunting takes the top of the list. An unsuspecting animal minding its own business is gunned down so it can be stuffed and mounted and yet that is called conservation.....conservation because some of the vast sums of money spent on this frankly embarrassing sport goes to the villagers. True conservation brings in people on photo safaris and some of that money goes to the villagers also. I am strongly in favor of animal rights and the sooner animals are no longer considered property the better. Animal abusers need to face the courts and have severe fines levied along with no ownership of creatures ever again. But depending on the state, that does not always happen, because it's always on a state by state basis.

Agree with everything you said...The somewhat good news is that animal abuse is now a felony in all 50 states. Whether the defendants are convicted and the sentences are just is a whole other story
