This is a terrible problem that is only getting worse. And now with an administration that could care less.

Yes, poverty, homelessness, hunger won't be spoken about let alone done anything about in this administration.

History shows us that Eventually this never ends well for the rich either. If we can just make it there…

Not only does this psychotic administration not care about the homeless, they are doing everything they can to create more homeless by reducing Social Security benefits, cutting /getting rid of SNAP and Medicaid, and creating massive job losses by downsizing various agencies. Because Trump and Musk only live to make more and more money, there is no room in their addled brains to realize the damage they are doing.

My guess is that the homeless population will increase quite a bit unless the states and local governments and nonprofits step up.

We treat humans as resources to be exploited and this is the result. (This piece will certainly be included in Untrickled’s weekly roundup next Friday.)

Well stated, Michelle, and thank you. The researchers I've shared here, like Jeremy Ney and Brian Goldstone can put names and faces on these statistics, but still they are ignored by most lawmakers. I am convinced that homelessness and poverty can be nearly eradicated with the right policy choices and the implementation of those laws and policies.

Certainly it can be -- we did not have widespread homelessness when I was a child. This is part of the Reagan legacy.

If we change our policies we can improve lives.

Yes, and I love that Brian Goldstone mentions that the studies on the homeless conducted during the Reagan administration turned the blame onto the homeless themselves and away from the stingy government help.

Thanks Joan. I recently heard someone asked, With all the urgencies around inequality, what single policy should we prioritise? They said housing. I would agree, closely followed by a guaranteed basic income, universal healthcare and education. None of these can happen without higher taxes, especially on excess wealth, and a strong commitment to public services. In the UK, in contrast, the Labour government is set to slash social welfare further, including for people with disabilities.

Thanks for weighing in with what's going on in the UK, Carrie. I didn't know social welfare programs were poised to be slashed—and to target those with disabilities... What I know of disability benefits here, it is a monstrously slow process and very little in payment. At least the UK has single-payer health insurance! I too put homelessness at the top—it is a national disgrace that few talk about.
