It is heartbreaking—it sinks to the level of cruelty...

Oh, thank you so much for sharing this post! And so glad to hear about the critical thinking class in Puerto Rico—Is it a totally separate class devoted to critical thinking? I've taught critical thinking at the college level, but only as part of a class on writing with research.

Happy New Year Joan! And congratulations on the three popular posts on the rigged economy. Generational wealth is indeed a form of "affirmative action". I wrote a post myself on wills and generational wealth last year, including the fact that in the UK only about 25% of people leave money to charity in their wills. Somehow the idea that people "should" leave money to their children but not to other causes has become ingrained, leading obviously to a sense of entitlement among the very wealthy. I like Thomas Pickkety's proposal to give all young people a good chunk of money when they're in their twenties as a kind of leveller. At some point last year I also came across a Substack post from a very wealthy New Yorker who has "generational wealth", describing how his family lives. Writing is a hobby for him obviously... This is a funny place to hang out sometimes. But it also gives insight into all sorts of interesting work. Keep it up!

Thanks, Carrie, and a very Happy New Year to you, too! I'll have to read your post on wills and generational wealth. I don't know how I missed it... I have "big plans" to finally read Pickkety in 2025. And thanks for the encouragement—I also plan to set a more regular writing schedule in 2025
