Greetings, I've tried to find your book "Crime and Punishment...." on Audible, with no success. Likewise, no success on the internet. I'm interested in this topic in particular. That being said, I have long wondered about how, at all, did the designations IE "Poor, Poverty line" come to fruition. I grew up in the 50's and 60's, came of age in the 70's. In the 90's I left my comfort zone career, and "took my chances" in the world. I've been fortunate enough to travel to places both within the USA, Mesoamerica and as far away as Eastern Europe, and break bread with peoples, that most social systems regard as "poor". I understand, I think, what you are saying with regard to trying to break out of the poverty line. I've done that myself. Something I've noticed about so-called poor people in other countries, at least the ones I've traveled to, that bears consideration. I recently returned from an extended stay in a small pueblo in southern Mexico. The idea of poverty like we know it in the US is not prevalent. This got me to wondering. I didn't realize I had grown up "poor". Navigating the economic system in the 70's through the 90's was not easy. I didn't have a piece of property to call my own etc and so on. The family that I lived with in Mexico seem far more relaxed and content with their lot in life than in the US. There's more but rather than go on here, can you direct me to where I can get a copy of your book? Thanks in Advance
Hey Joan! Congratulations on your anniversary and on your incredible work. Keep it up -- it's important and so enlightening and educational. I remember when we met during the Substack Go event and I am so impressed with where you've gone with this newsletter. Keep fighting the good fight. Congrats again and hugs!
Thank you so much, Jodi! I also remember our "Go Group"—you really helped guide us and achieve our goals for the session. I am so grateful for your readership and that you find it enlightening! I can tell you that I'm learning a lot alongside my readers... Hugs back to ya!
Dear Joan congratulations on your year anniversary and so happy to have found your Substack. It’s an incredible platform for writers and especially readers. I appreciate so much the topics you cover as my thoughts about these issues align with yours. It’s overwhelming the amount of topics that can be covered and while I’d hope to become a writer myself, I simply can’t seem to get my Substack going because of the many topics I could choose from. Too many so I get distracted. Grateful to be reading your thoughtful and informative newsletter. Thank you.
Thank you, Lisa! I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment, and I am grateful for your support. I'm not exactly an authority on Substack...but if you have any questions, feel free to ask me via my email. Also, you could sign up for Substack's chat (online thread) that it hosts every Thursday from 1-2 pm EST. It's a forum for Substack writers and those contemplating writing on Substack to ask questions of folks who work for Substack and other writers...and get to know other Substacks and the authors behind them. I'd say: jump right in!
Joan!!! I just heard the news - we will miss you dearly!!! I hope all is ok. Please let me know if you need help with anything. I wanted to say I have thoroughly enjoyed working with and getting to know you over the past 3 years - you made every single night go by so quickly with lots of interesting conversations. Thank you for the great memories in the Writing Center! Please drop a line anytime. zinminjr@gmail.com or 614-736-5025.
Congratulations on the milestone! Glad to hear you've got some good new topics planned. Unfortunately, I don't think you'll ever run out of things to write about, so I'm happy you're publishing this newsletter.
Yes, I think it has gotten worse...particularly with front line workers and Covid. But I believe we can work to change it if we collectively care enough.

Nickel and dimed was very impactful for me. Unfortunately it seems things have only gotten worse since it was published
