Interesting to me that Italy just announced it will be energy independent by 2025. How? Well, they're not exactly sure. But they're committed to making it happen. Their energy costs have always been high and now, due to the war on Ukraine, they don't want to continue the supply from Russia.

One thing that will surely help is their 50% refund on all alternative energy installations. meaning, you install solar panels? You get 50% back on that cost. And when I was just there, I received a hybrid Fiat Panda when renting. No extra cost. I didn't even ask for this - this is just what I was given. These things can go a long way. Unfortunately, here in the US (as you point out) we have oil companies that put big $$ into stopping such initiatives.

yes, the companies should be taxed.

Incentivizing hybrid and electric vehicles and investments in renewable energy is a good way to help turn things around. I remember I bought a Prius in 2006 and received a hefty tax credit, as one example.
